Gut Microbiome

What we know

The gut microbiome is the community of microorganisms and their genetic material living in the gastrointestinal tract. Its composition and function are influenced by diet, medication, age, environment, sleep and many other factors.

What is emerging

Research increasingly focuses on microbial function, not only which species are present. Diversity is a useful marker, but it is associated with (not a guarantee of) a well-functioning ecosystem.

What this may mean in practice

Your microbiome is an ecosystem shaped by what you repeatedly do. Supporting it through diet and lifestyle may support overall gut function. Changes are best interpreted in context, not as a single before-and-after test result.

Fibre & Short-Chain Fatty Acids

What we know

Dietary fibre that reaches the large intestine is fermented by gut bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate and butyrate.

What is emerging

The type of fibre and an individual's microbial composition can influence which SCFAs are produced, and in what amounts. Research into optimal fibre variety, rather than a single "best" fibre, is ongoing.

What this may mean in practice

Food-first, varied fibre intake, from a wide range of plants, may support this process. General guidance often points to a daily range of roughly 25–30g, though individual needs vary and this is not a prescription.

Butyrate

What we know

Butyrate is an important energy source for colonocytes (the cells lining the colon) and is involved in gut-barrier and immune-related processes.

What is emerging

The exact effect of butyrate appears to depend on the individual, the type of fibre consumed, and the wider microbial ecosystem. It is not yet possible to predict a precise individual response.

What this may mean in practice

You do not buy a healthy ecosystem; you feed it. Food sources of fermentable fibre are the starting point. Supplementation is only considered when it may be justified, not as a default.

Gut Barrier

What we know

The intestinal barrier regulates exchange between the gut environment and the body. It includes mucus, epithelial cells, tight junctions and immune components.

What is emerging

Barrier function research is growing, but the popular term "leaky gut" is not a formal diagnosis and should not be used as a universal explanation for symptoms.

What this may mean in practice

We use "intestinal barrier function" rather than fear-based language. Barrier dysfunction can't be diagnosed from symptoms alone. Appropriate testing and medical review matter when it's genuinely relevant.

Gut–Skin Axis

What we know

The gut-skin axis describes biological links involving immune signalling, metabolism, hormones and microbial products.

What is emerging

Research in this area is growing, but acne and inflammatory skin conditions are multifactorial. Gut factors are one contributor among several, not the sole explanation.

What this may mean in practice

We explore gut-supportive habits alongside appropriate dermatological care, never instead of it. Your skin may be showing a wider pattern, but it is never the whole diagnosis.

Blood Sugar & Metabolic Health

What we know

Meal composition, fibre, protein, sleep, movement and stress can influence post-meal glucose responses and appetite.

What is emerging

Interest in meal sequencing, such as eating vegetables and protein before refined carbohydrates, is an active area of research, though individual responses vary considerably.

What this may mean in practice

Vegetables first where practical, protein at each main meal, and carbohydrates in context, not demonised. This supports steadier daily energy; it does not diagnose or replace medical management of diabetes or metabolic conditions.

Gut–Brain Axis

What we know

The gut and brain communicate through multiple pathways, including the vagus nerve, immune signalling, and microbially-derived metabolites.

What is emerging

Research is exploring how gut-derived signals may relate to mood, stress response and cognitive function. This remains an active and developing field, not a settled explanation for mental health.

What this may mean in practice

Supporting gut health alongside sleep and stress management can be one part of a broader approach to wellbeing. It is not a substitute for appropriate mental health care.

Healthy Ageing & Longevity

What we know

Healthy ageing depends on multiple interacting systems: cardiovascular health, movement, muscle, sleep, social connection, medical prevention and nutrition.

What is emerging

Interest is growing in how microbiome patterns relate to markers associated with ageing, though this area of research is still developing.

What this may mean in practice

The goal is not simply more years, but better-functioning years. Gut health is one pillar of healthy ageing, alongside movement, sleep and medical prevention, not the only one.

Scientific confidence should never exceed the evidence.
